Maternal Fetal medicine specialist is an obstetrician and gynecologist who has undergone additional 2-3 years of training in assessment and treatment of fetal problems and also treat complications related to pregnancy.
- Early pregnancy / dating scan – Confirm pregnancy ,check heart beat , check size of baby ,check uterus or ovaries abnormalities .
- Extended NT scan with uterine artery Doppler screening done at 11- 14 weeks to look for markers for any genetic problems, early detection of fetal anomalies and to screen for risk for fetus developing growth problems and mother for risk of developing hypertension in pregnancy .
- Mid trimester Fetal anomaly scan/ morphology scan is done at 19 – 20 weeks to look for fetal abnormalities ,check fetal heart beat ,measure fetal size ,assess the position of placenta ,look for amniotic fluid and screen for uterine artery Doppler .
If any abnormalities are diagnosed the same would be discussed with couple and referred to concerned specialities genetics ,paediatric cardiologist ,neonatologist and other paediatric sub-specialities for providing comprehensive and evidence based scientific care .
- Growth / BPP scan – To look for position of the baby , look for evolving fetal abnormalities ,size of the baby, movements ,blood flow in baby and amount of Amniotic fluid .We also look at the placenta position and length of cervix .
- 3D / 4D scans – Provides additional information but does not replace 2D scan .
It can be done at any stage of pregnancy and provides surface images of face and other body parts if baby position is favourable .

Indication is previous baby or family history of heart disease, when there is abnormality of other body parts of the baby, IVF pregnancy and when mother has medical problems like diabetes, auto immune disorders or when she is on medicines like anti epileptics etc.
